Susan M. Szulewski, MD, MBA
Dr. Susan Szulewski is a psychiatrist and health system executive who serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of McLean Hospital and Mass General Brigham Psychiatry and Mental Health. She rose through McLean’s leadership over the past decade, holding roles including Medical Director of the Clinical Evaluation Center, Vice President of the Medical Staff, Associate Chief Medical Officer, and Chief Medical Officer of McLean Hospital. She also served as Vice President of Clinical Operations for Mass General Brigham Behavioral and Mental Health before stepping into her current executive leadership role. Across the broader system, she has led inpatient psychiatry, behavioral health operations, and enterprise access and capacity initiatives designed to improve the movement of patients across the continuum of psychiatric care.
An emergency psychiatry specialist by background, she earlier served as Chief of Patient Assessment Services at Butler Hospital and held faculty and course-director roles at Brown before joining McLean and Harvard Medical School. She serves on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and holds the Rose-Marie & Eijk van Otterloo Chair in Psychiatry at McLean Hospital. She has led quality, safety, and access initiatives across Mass General Brigham, including work on behavioral health acuity measurement, centralized access and capacity, physician well-being, and efforts to characterize and reduce racial disparities in emergency care. She also serves in leadership roles with state and national behavioral health organizations.
Her contributions have been recognized with McLean’s Jonathan Cole Award, multiple Mass General Brigham Pillars of Excellence Awards, and honors for mentorship of women leaders. Dr. Szulewski brings experience in behavioral health leadership, hospital operations, quality and safety, and system-level access strategy.
