Biography

Dr. Paul Anderson oversees the research enterprise and academic strategy of Mass General Brigham as Chief Academic Officer. A physician-scientist trained in rheumatology and immunology, he built a laboratory program studying the biology of stress granules and the post-transcriptional regulation of inflammation and TNF production, work that advanced understanding of immune-mediated and inflammatory disease and was supported by more than three decades of continuous NIH funding across multiple R01 and P01 awards. Within Brigham, he previously led the Division of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy before assuming enterprise research leadership.

His scientific contributions have been recognized with honors including a Pew Scholar Award, the Arthritis Foundation Biomedical Science Award, a Leukemia Society Scholar Award, and his alma mater’s alumni achievement award, and he is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He has helped shape national science as a chair within NIH study sections and through editorial board service for journals in immunology and rheumatology, and he has long taught and mentored students and fellows at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Anderson brings experience directing large research organizations, setting scientific priorities, developing faculty, and connecting discovery to institutional strategy.
