Julia Mason, DNP, MBA, BSN, CENP
Dr. Julia Mason is a nurse executive with more than 35 years of leadership across academic and community health systems, currently serving as Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she leads a workforce of more than 4,000 nurses and an $800 million budget. At the Brigham, she balanced and right-sized the budget within 18 months, restructured nursing leadership for roughly $9 million in annual savings, and achieved a vacancy rate near 3 percent with retention above 92 percent, alongside improvements in infection rates, falls, and nurse engagement.
Previously, as Chief Nursing Officer of Cleveland’s MetroHealth System, she led the clinical execution of a same-day move of more than 280 patients into a new hospital, developed team-based and virtual nursing models to address staffing pressures, reduced the emergency department’s left-without-being-seen rate from 8 to under 3 percent, and built nursing pipelines with local schools that converted most student nurses into full-time hires. A champion of high-reliability and evidence-based practice in Magnet-designated organizations, she has invested in nurse leadership development, succession planning, and the translation of frontline practice into published work. Dr. Mason brings experience in health system operations, quality, financial management, and workforce strategy.
