Catherine Giess, MD
Dr. Catherine Giess is an academic radiology leader and breast imaging specialist who serves as Deputy Chair of the Department of Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Over more than a decade of progressive leadership she has served as Division Chief of Breast Imaging, Executive Vice Chair, Senior Vice Chair of Physician Affairs, and Interim Chair, and most recently as Medical Director of Mass General Brigham Enterprise Breast Imaging, where she standardized breast imaging practice across the system. She helped lead the department through the COVID-19 pandemic and its recovery, and as its first Chief Wellness Officer she developed programs to address physician burnout and engagement.
A breast imaging specialist focused on screening quality and diagnostic accuracy, she has contributed to the field through the Brigham’s Center for Evidence-Based Imaging and has practiced across the Brigham, Dana-Farber, Faulkner, and Massachusetts General hospitals. She has directed resident education in breast imaging, chaired numerous faculty search and promotions committees, and currently helps govern the use of artificial intelligence in clinical imaging, serving on and co-chairing MGB committees overseeing imaging AI, clinical data science, and quality and safety. Dr. Giess brings experience in enterprise integration, operational leadership, technology governance, clinician well-being, and academic medicine.
